As thousands of young girls screamed her name, Minaj appeared on stage inside a pink rocket ship as fireworks and dry ice exploded around her. Decked out in a black tutu with matching bra and long blonde hair, Minaj belted out opening track “Come On A Cone” as her Barbz went crazy all around the arena.
With a stage featuring multiple levels and changing graphics projected onto video screens, including a nightclub, the ocean and her bedroom, Minaj’s stage set up was impressive to say the least. Joined throughout by her excellent back-up dancers, she made sure to perform all the hits, with “Beez In The Trap”, “Did It On ‘Em” and “Moment 4 Life” all getting a look in.
As well as her own tunes, Minaj included verses from many of her collaborations, including Rihanna’s “Raining Men”, Drake’s “Make Me Proud”, Big Sean’s “Dance (A$$)” and Trey Songz’s “Bottoms Up”. While great songs, it was Minaj’s own material from her two solo albums that really got the noise levels cranking, with “Va Va Voom” and smash hit “Super Bass” generating a massive response from the majority pre-teen crowd.
Flames lit the stage during the energetic “Fire Burns” before Minaj dropped the tempo, joined by two backing singers for the ballad “Save Me” and pop-tastic “Marilyn Monroe”. The pint-sized darling disappeared under the floor during the song’s outro, appearing minutes later dressed in a floral top and tight white jeans atop a pink car in just one of six costume changes for the night. Minaj launched into club banger “Automatic”, “Pound The Alarm” and David Guetta track “Turn Me On”, leaving the crowd resembling a rave.
Minaj was playful throughout, applauding her Barbz for coming to see her. The rapper stopped to talk with fans and attempt her Aussie accent, reciting a reasonable “g’day mate”. She generally seemed happy to be performing as she bounced about the stage, shaking her wonderfully formed behind and pulling crazy facial expressions.
Wearing a revealing top held in place by tape that would make Madonna blush, Minaj’s alter ego Roman Zolanski made an appearance. “Roman Holiday” and “Roman’s Revenge” are great hip hop tracks, but it was Minaj’s rendition of her verse from Kanye West’s “Monster” that displayed just how talented a rapper she is.
Donning a grey pilot’s hat and dressed in a stunning white outfit, Minaj finished with her biggest hit “Starships”, bringing the curtain down on a intoxicating performance that left nobody doubting her position as pop’s biggest and brightest star.
