Back in the day, fan mail used to be the basic means of communicating with your favorite stars, but with the dawn of Twitter, having them follow you is pretty much the equivalent. While some celebrities may be hesitant to accept their legion of fans onto their timeline, Nicki Minaj is an exception.
On Thursday (November 4), the Harajuku Barbie announced a Twitter contest where she’ll follow 100 lucky fans who help promote her forthcoming album, Pink Friday.
“TMRW I’m follwng 100 ppl. Take a pic wearing pink, holding a sign that says #itspinkfridayhoe & tweet #NickiMinajPinkFriday. Starts 9amEST,” she tweeted.
The Young Money MC was playful, telling fans how to get an edge over their competitors: “Thongs will get special consideration in tmrw’s competition but u MUST be 18 & Over to show ur ass cheeks. (Goes for boyz & BARBZ) lmaooooo.”
Minaj has been known to use her Twitter account for more than just direct fan communication. In August, the lyricist teamed up with Drake to play a little joke on their fans, announcing that the two had tied the knot. The news set the blogosphere on fire until the duo revealed their innocent intentions and annulled the Twitter marriage.
Recently, Minaj admitted she’d been afraid to release her debut album, Pink Friday, which comes out November 22. Regardless of her early fears, the Young Money rapper told YRB magazine that the completed product erased any hesitation.
“I know that Pink Friday is a classic album. I have never been this proud of anything in my life,” Minaj said. “I just think that it’s such a dynamic body of work. I’m no longer afraid to drop it. Now, I know it’s time.”

Nicki Minaj took to Twitter again to announce the first five dates of her upcoming tour earlier today. The rapper is set to kick-off her tour in Philly on October 22nd. Over the course of about a week, she’ll also hit up Washington D.C., Boston, Waterbury (CT), and Trinidad. Keep an eye on her official tour site for all the details including additional dates and ticket sales.
It started with Diddy (@iamdiddy) Tweeting all day and all night about everything from clean linen to new Ciroc drinks he’d make up on the fly. Kanye West let him finish, and then he joined Twitter (@kanyewest) just last month. Since then the Twitterverse has been infiltrated by West’s theories on art and fashion, along with witnessing the “evolution” of Hip-Hop in the form of a Justin Bieber/Kanye West/Raekwon collaboration (Kanye only follows one person, @justinbieber).
Let’s not forget the Tweets about Mos Def on the “Power” Remix, only to find out it was still Jay-Z (we’re not mad). Studio sessions, banning denim, all of this and more can be found on Ye’s Twitter account. He’s been retweeted incessantly by celebs and pedestrians alike, and it won’t be long before people start unfollowing him (Twitter can be so fickle).
So once Kanye pisses you off for the last time, we have ten other Hip-Hop artists for you to follow.

Nicki Minaj has a “Nictionary” of her plays on words and a Team Minaj of faithful followers from quite possibly every corner of the world. It’s sweet watching Nicki talk to her fellow Barbies and offer words of inspiration, while discussing her lasik eye surgery. It’s also the only place to get up to date information on her long-awaited album Pink Friday.
That’s right! If you have a Twitter account, be sure to add “The Mistress” as she has finally joined to shut down all of the fakes! You can find her at http://twitter.com/nickiminaj – the only official Nicki Minaj twitter account from the lovely woman herself!
