ARTICLE: “My Chick Bad” Director Talks Remix Video

006VIBE: There is so much going in the “My Chick Bad” video, from horror movie references to high-end fashion. What type of early ideas did you have for the treatment?
Taj Stansberry: I got the call from Ludacris’ people maybe about a week prior to making the video. It wasn’t like the normal conference call. We talked about the treatment first before they sent me the song. They were like, “Taj, we need this look. Nicki Minaj is on it and we want to do a remix the same day of Super Bowl weekend in Miami.” Early on, it was discussed that they were trying to get a “Flava In Ya Ear” type treatment. But I told them there’s some things you just can’t touch, man. I didn’t want to remake a classic. I wanted to do our own “Flava In Ya Ear.” We are dealing with new technology. We shot it anamorphic. Both [the original and remix] videos are fun and sexy, but street.

Nicki Minaj’s look in the song’s original video was, um, interesting. How did you come with up with her treatment?
She brings a lot of things to the table, but I felt like because she is new, her animated personality hadn’t come across 100 percent yet. And that was my goal. I wanted to give her all four corners: the lighting, the stage, the props, and the wardrobe. Nicki had these lyrics where she was Jason and Freddie Krueger. She was purposely stuttering on the track, which made her sound like a psycho. And I wanted to play that up. We placed her in a straight-jacket and some chrome Freddie claws and had them painted pink like nail polish. We wanted to make her look crazy, but still feminine. It was a mix of 5150 with Vanity Fair.

MTV: Nicki Minaj Wants To Be In ‘A Nightmare On Elm Street’

Nicki Minaj has an affinity for a certain silver-screen serial killer. On Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad,” Minaj big-ups Mr. Freddy Krueger himself.

“Tuck yourself in, you better hold on to ya teddy,” she raps. “It’s ‘Nightmare on Elm Street,’ and guess who’s playing Freddy?”

Before that, on the unofficial remix of Beyoncé’s “Sweet Dreams,” she name-drops the dream thief again. “Yo, Young Money right here/ Bike here, throw it up, no high chair/ Cold like a white bear/ Freddy Krueger, I’m a rap bi— nightmare.”

On the set of her “Massive Attack” video, we asked Nick if she was anticipating the upcoming remake of the popular 1980s horror film. The Jamaica Queens native said she just found out about it, but she should have had a role in the movie.

“I didn’t even know they were doing it,” Nicki said with her sunny smile. “They should have cast me. Like a freaking crazy lunatic running crazy down in a wig and the Freddy glove with pink fingernails on it? They missed the mark.”

Jamie Foxx Wanted Nicki Minaj’s First Single For Himself, Says Sean Garrett

From what we’ve seen of Nicki Minaj—the Barbie braggadocio and hot pink obsession—it’s hard to think her upcoming single “Massive Attack,” was originally sought after by a man. But the song’s writer and producer, Sean Garrett, says Jamie Foxx was pleading for it.

“I say this because I love Jamie, but he actually wanted Nicki Minaj’s first single. He really, really wanted that record,” Garrett told VIBE, mentioning that Foxx heard the record before it reached Minaj. “He was very persistent. Superstars don’t ever like to be told ‘no.’ I didn’t necessarily feel good about telling him ‘no’ either, but out of respect for him and our friendship I wanted to make sure that I did give him something else that was great.“

Garrett—who is currently working on Foxx’s fourth album, tentatively titled Body—further explained why the song would have set the Academy Award winner back. “As much as I love Jamie, I know that wasn’t the record for him. But you know when artists hear something that’s a hit, they don’t care what it sound like. They want it. I didn’t want to put Jamie out there looking crazy,” he continued.

“Jamie is a little bit more adult contemporary. As a producer, you have to give artists what’s best for them, so I always have to keep into perspective who Jamie is and not give him something that’s not in his lane. It could be a hot record, but it’s still got to fit his swag or the fans aren’t going to believe it. Jamie Foxx, ‘Massive Attack’? C’mon, nah.”

While Garrett held out on Foxx, he revealed that he had another female in mind for the record before Minaj. “I can’t tell you who I really did the record for. But I will tell you that I definitely had somebody in mind like a Nicki. Somebody that had the personality to handle a record that big,” he says. “Only Nicki and one other person in my eyes could’ve done this record and at the end of the day I made an executive call and saw that it was better suited for her. And the shit is incredible.”

Sean Garrett Rumbles in the Jungle in Nicki Minaj’s ‘Massive Attack’ Video

“I’m in my 2010 Rambo, so hard I had to let Nic pink out the Lambo/ Ya’ll already know we got the ammo, massive attack,” sings Sean “The Pen” Garrett on Nicki Minaj’s first single, “Massive Attack,” which he co-produced with Alex Da Kid. The brawny Garrett gets his Rambo on in the militaristic clip, shot against a jungle backdrop and in the desert of Lancaster, Calif.

Next Friday, the singer-songwriter will head to Miami to film a video for his Barbie-assisted single “Get It All” with director Gil Green.
