Nicki Minaj Breaks U.K. Records with “Starships”

With its two-spot jump from No. 5 to No. 3, ‘Starships’ vaults Nicki past Missy Elliott in the record books. Elliott set the previous record back in 2001, when she peaked at No. 5 with her hit ’4 My People.’ Minaj actually owns two spots in the U.K. Top 10 this week — she’s also holding down No. 10 with ‘Turn Me On,’ a collaboration with David Guetta.

It all adds up to a nice bit of momentum for Minaj leading up to the April 3 release of her second full-length solo album, ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.’ Although some fans have griped that ‘Starships’ is a disappointing sell-out single for the talented MC, Minaj has shrugged off their complaints, and both ‘Starships’ and ‘Turn Me On’ are expected to end up on the recently completed album.

“It’s going in a very free, exhilarating direction in terms of me owning who I am and me enjoying the process of making music,” Minaj said of ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.’ I think that when you get the album you’ll feel as if I had absolutely no boundaries. That’s probably the best way to explain it so that you understand. The album just has no boundaries. The album cannot be boxed in.”
